For those of you out there to get a steal, you are wasting your time and money.  Shopping on craigslist and see the car you like for a few thousand less than the average price?  Here is what will happen:  Either:

1. the vehicle has a branded title. (rebuilt, salvage, water damage, etc...) Therefore the value is aprox 50% of the average clean car
2.  when you arrive to the dealer they tell you: " oh we just sold it but let me show you this other one"
3. the car has such prepares on it its equal to the value of a regular priced one after you pay for repairs

Advice about shopping for your next vehicle.

In the market for a used vehicle?  Here are a few tips!

Buying cash?  Always remember if it sounds too good to be true, it is!!! If you are shopping price I recommend searching the internet to figure out what the average market price is for that particular vehicle you are looking for and once you find the one you like you will have already prepared yourself to know what the bottom price should be.  Be extremely careful of dealers selling rebuilt vehicles. (that when the price normally is too good to be true)

Looking to get financing and dont have the best credit?  Find the vehicle you are looking for?  Ask the dealer what the cash price is, then when the finance contract is presented you will know how much the financing fee is.  If the financing fee is more than aprox 14% of the price you are being over charged.  Keep in mind this is worst case senario. 

Looking for financing and have good credit?  Of course check the market to get the best fair market price evaluation for the vehicle your looking for but also consult the bank you have your accounts with.  (Wells Fargo, CitiBank, Bank of America)  Ask them what type of rates they can offer you and terms.  Now once you go to the dealership you found the vehicle you want at you can compare the financing options they have versus your banks.

Which car dealer should you trust?

In the market for a used car and not sure if you can trust the dealer you found the car that you want at?  The only way a used car dealer can fool you or rip you off is if you dont do your homework.  Just about everyone today has a smart phone, use it!!!!  Take a minute to see what the fair market price is for your car.  Use websites like autotrader.com and cars.com and use the average price you find.  Keep in mind if you see one priced really low there are 1 of 2 scenarios.  Either the car is in bad shape of previously in a bad accident or the dealer is pricing it low to fool you and when you get to the dealer they either tell you they sold it or that is the price but the dealer fee is something out of this world. 

Does the dealer you are at have a website? if not they must be either amateurs or have something to hide.  Ask the list price.  Getting financing?  Do not do a buy here pay here, it wont fix your credit and you will pay way too much for the car.

New cars vs. Used cars

In the market for a vehicle?  Not sure weather or not to go new or used?

To be completely honest it all depends on your intentions.  If you have good credit and like to change your car every 2 years like me? I recommend a new car lease.  You get to drive a new car and basically turn it in evey 2 years and get a new car for lower payments than a purchase loan.

Purchasing new vs used?  If you are the type to keep your car till it just wont drive anymore get a new car.  Obviously it will last you longer than a used one.  If you want to buy a car and not lose so much value find a good used car.  You can trade it in whenever you want and the depreciation value is way less than a new card.

This is my advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1ST TIME BUYER?

In the market for a car?  1st time buying a car and worried about interest and payments?

Here is my advice.  Find the car you love that is within reason, put a decent down payment and deal with the loan you are getting.  What is most important to know is that since you are a 1st time buyer the bank is unsure weather you will pay your monthly payments on time or not since you have no history so they offer you a loan with a slightly higher interest rate.  Pay your payments on time for 6-8 months to establish a good relationship with the bank and credit record.  Take that good track record and either refinance or trade into a newer car.  The banks will now have confidence that you will pay your loan and offer you a lower interest rate and make the loan more worth your while.

Find a few dealers in the same area that have the cars you are looking for.  Stop by each dealer and test drive the car you like and quickly go to the next one for a test drive before talking numbers.  After a few test drives determine the one that is in the best condition and most to your liking.  This saves regrets.  Ask the dealer the price and ask if there are any incentives.

More impotant than anything ask about extended warranty programs.  Search the web for the most honorable warranty companies and make sure you sign up for a good one and last of all make sure you add gap insurance to any contract you sign.  Gap insurnace will cover any gap in a claim against your auto insurance company that is not covered in case of an accident.

Here is just a bit of inside information to help you better understand the used car dealers inventory.  Most used car dealers buy their inventory from auctions.  If the dealer doesn't know the mechanics of vehicles very well chances are their cars will show it.

After a dealer buys a car from an auction they have an opportunity to put the vehicle in PSI (post sale inspection) which cost the dealer an extra fee.  For those dealers who are cheap and want to save the extra $90 fee take a gamble.
